We witnessed a great scrap in the Bantamweight division between two top-tier prospects. Adrian Yanez and Randy Costa entertained everyone at home and in The Apex with a war where both men had great moments. An electric start from Costa was thwarted by Yanez and the Houston native turned the tables in the second round.  Yanez also earned himself a month’s supply of Dr.Pepper after a bet between the two arose on social media.

Costa flew out of the blocks in the opening round. Plenty of kicks and stance switching had Yanez flustered, as he struggled to time the unorthodox striking. Costa then began to implement a beautiful jab, snapping the head of Yanez back multiple times. Halfway through the first the Lauzon MMA based fighter had outstuck his opponent 43-10 in significant strikes. The fast start from the underdog really had Yanez on the back foot and frustrated. However, there seemed to be a slight shift in momentum. Adrian began to take the centre of the octagon and pressure Randy. Costa seemed to start slowing down towards the end of the first with Yanez beginning to find his timing. However Randy had definitely done enough to earn himself a 10-9 by the end of the first with his fantastic jabs and kicking game.

The second round was a complete contrast to the first. Yanez smothered Costa with his pressure. He began to tee off with immaculate combinations and grueling body shots. Costa tried to implement his jab again, however Yanez was in his element now. The end of the fight came when Yanez landed both a right hand and a digging left hook to Costa’s body. As his opponent covered up, Adrian split Costa’s guard with a perfect uppercut. Randy finally succumbed to the pressure and was dropped. A couple follow up shots finished off the fight and Yanez walked away victorious with his opponent doubled over in pain.

Yanez extends his win-streak to 7 now, and improves to 3-0 in the octagon. He showed tonight that he can battle through adversity and come out on the winning side. I believe tonight we really saw why both Adrian Yanez and Randy Costa are both highly-regarded prospects. It’s not often we see two young talents matched-up together so early in their career. These two gave us a fight of the highest level, and it will be interesting to see how they both grow and improve after tonight. We could definitely see Adrian Yanez’s name in the top 15 by the end of the year. Keep an eye out for him.
