The Story Behind Women’s MMA Pioneer Gina Carano And Her Disney Departure

Gina Carano’s (7-1 MMA) legacy of bringing legitimacy and prominence to Women’s Mixed Martial Arts is simply undebatable. Sadly, after a particularly inflammatory social media post this past week, Carano’s legacy could be in a little trouble.

Wednesday, Disney announced in a statement, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” a Lucasfilm spokesperson said in a statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

A Post From Gina Carano’s Twitter Account

This sharp reaction from Disney is directly in response to Carano’s Tweet recklessly implying that conservatives are being persecuted on a level similar to Jewish people in World War Two Germany. Wow. A lot to unpack there. Carano was quick to respond, announcing an affiliation and film project with Ben Shapiro and The Daily Wire media group in a defiant follow up tweet Friday.

As the fallout unfolds, what do you think is next for Gina now that Disney isn’t signing the checks anymore? Okay, stay with me here but Carano clearly needs some downtime, right? Reassessing priorities is quite in order and frankly…the internet could use a Gina break. During this proposed downtime, Carano could be doing something we never thought possible. How about get ready for one last fight? Haven’t we all wondered how Rousey vs Carano would have turned out? Well…we can find out, dammit! Don’t tell me that these ladies are too old when forty year old Sara McMann is still out there swinging!

Both long retired from combat sports, the matchup is as intriguing as ever! “Ring Rust” would be experienced by both so neither would have an advantage over each other in that aspect. Make no mistake that so many are discussing the opportunities Carano has lost leaving Disney. How about the doors that can open in wake of that demise? Imagine the UFC getting this fight made?! On the biggest stage in MMA, a card with this fight as the main event would generate at least one million pay per view buys and be the biggest “Legend vs Legend” fight since Mark Coleman vs Randy Couture.

Okay, I know! I know. That’s not going to happen, but any kind of a stunt that prolongs Gina’s steady, inevitable transformation into a political personality is welcome, don’t you think? Training for a big fight could possibly awaken something within her. It would also keep her occupied and in a place to earn back any lost grace. Or Ronda could score one more armbar. That would rock as well.
