One of the biggest stories in MMA over the past few months has been the return of Conor McGregor. Over the past couple of months, McGregor has been searching for an adequate opponent for his attempt to reclaim UFC gold. We’ve been through a lot with this story-line, including the “retirement” of McGregor. When he suddenly came out of “retirement”, no one was shocked. However, everyone anticipated who he would decide to fight next.
Though most fighters are calling Conor’s name at 155, one sticks out in particular. Dustin Poirier. Poirier, who had just come off of a spectacular win over Dan Hooker, messaged McGregor. Dustin wanted to fight McGregor no matter the circumstances.
Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier had fought before. In one of the most defining moments of McGregor’s career, he knocked out Dustin Poirier in the first round. You may be wondering why this would be the fight Conor and Dustin would want, despite the result of their first meeting. Their first fight occurred 6 years ago at 145. Both men have changed and improved extraordinarily since their last meeting.
Other than Conor and Dustin wanting to rematch each-other, the UFC had major reasons as well. The fight was originally made to see who would face Khabib next. Then Nurmagomedov retired. Once he surprisingly retired, the fight seemed to have even higher implications. The event is set to take place on January 23rd. This would make it the perfect candidate for a championship fight.
Dana White recently said that the fight would not be for the title, despite it lining up perfectly. White, who held a press conference following the DWCS on Tuesday, answered many questions. Among them was the question about Conor vs Dustin. Dana White swiftly said that the fight would not be for lightweight gold. This decision left many fans confused.
This can only mean one thing, Dana White knows something. Obviously, there have been rumors of Khabib returning to the UFC. The most likely reason for the belt not being on the line is that Dana knows Khabib wants to come back. Who Khabib would face, none of us know at the moment. But if that is really what is going on, the fate of the lightweight division will change tremendously.
