The UFC’s Sep. 12 card has just lost its main event. The title eliminator bout will be left on hold as multiple sources tell MMA Island that Glover Teixeira will not make it to the UFC Apex, as his latest COVID-19 test has unfortunately come back positive.

#4 Ranked contender in the world, Teixeira was set to make his second main event appearance in 2020 against fellow Brazilian and title challenger, Thiago Santos. Santos hasn’t fought since 2019, where he fell short in a split decision loss to Jon Jones. He has since made his recovery and was looking to resurge himself as a violent force at 205 LBS. However, COVID-19 had other plans.

The highly awaited match, while cancelled, has been postponed to a later date. October 3rd, location TBD. No last-minute, short-notice opponents will be needed to fill in for the main event slot this time around.

Santos vs Teixeira will no longer take place before Reyes-Blachowicz, who fight for the vacant title at UFC 253, Sep. 26. With a new champ crowned in September, ‘Marreta’ and the seasoned vet, Teixeira, will look to plead their case for a title shot with an impressive win to start off October.

While this is not a confirmed title eliminator, many eyes are on this matchup to launch someone into the title conversation. However, if the victor of Santos-Teixeira leaves with an unimpressive or controversial outcome, the contract to fight the champion may fall to Aleksander Rakic, who has also been campaigning for a crack at the title, following his win over Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith.

The UFC is currently looking for a fight to fill in the main event slot. Rumors are that the co-main event between Angela Hill and Michelle Waterson will be upgraded to main, however it is not official just quite yet.
