Joanna Jedrzejczyk just won’t settle for contender status. The former UFC Strawweight Champion wants to reign as queen again.
With Rose Namajunas off the throne and Carla Esparza sitting atop it, perhaps it is JJ’s time to shine once again. Of course, Jedrzejczyk has one way thing in between her a and a potential title shot: Zhang Weili.
Jedrzejczyk will run back her 2020 ‘fight of the year’ against Zhang Weili at UFC 275. Ahead of the trip to Singapore, Jedrzejczyk talked about title aspirations and a monumental year ahead of her.
“The future is bright,” Jedrzejcyzk told MMA Island. “I know I will get the title shot after I win [against] Weili Zhang in Singapore. I’m at the point where I wanted to be.”
“I am preparing for everything and anything. I will be in the best shape ever. I’m in my best shape ever now, three weeks before the fight. I’m preparing for the hardest fight in my fighting career.”
History has a tendency to repeat itself. That’s what would happen when Esparza beat Namajunas for the strawweight title again— as she did back in 2014.
With Esparza as the reigning champion, Jedrzejczyk believes she will once again steal the gold from ‘The Cookie Monster’ in her first title defense. That would be the best case scenario for the Polish fighter and would make it simply the best year ever.
“After this fight [Esparza vs. Namajunas 2], history just makes a circle again,” Jedrzejcyzk continued. “I will be the champion again, of this year 2022. Before this year I promised myself and somehow I created this vibe that it’s going to the best year of my life. Personal life, fighting life, sports life— business as well.
“There are so many things I want to work on. There’s a creator above me but I feel like I’m responsible for what’s happening around me and how I take this stuff. That’s the beautiful part of it. Carla’s the champ and she just proved that everything and anything is possible. This fight showed how crazy this sport [is].”
The former champ continued.
“I won the belt in the fight with Carla. I lost to Rose, I won with Andrade. Rose lost to Andrade… that’s crazy. That’s the beauty of this sport. Everything and anything is possible.”
It’s definitely possible but will Joanna Jedrzejcyzk regain the UFC Strawweight title in 2022? Find out as she works her way back into title contention at UFC 275 on June 11th.
