Fight fans have been itching to see Nick Diaz make the walk to the octagon since his last appearance against Anderson Silva; it would seem our prayers have been answered with the Diaz brother set to return early next year.
It has been nearly 5 years since we’ve seen Diaz in the octagon, the last time we saw him was February 1, 2015 where he sustained a unanimous decision loss (now a NC) to Anderson Silva. However the bout was eventually ruled a no contest after both athletes failed a drug test.
Diaz would receive a 5 year suspension for marijuna metabolites in his system from the Nevada State Athletic Commission which was later reduced to only 18 months. Being eligible to fight in 2016, Diaz would go on to not to having a fight lined up in more than 5 years,
The Stockton-native was rumored to make his long-awaited return against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 235 in 2019, however this fight did not come into fruition.
Kevin Mubenga (Diaz’s manager) revealed to ESPN on Sunday that Diaz has successfully completed a 14-week diet and training regimen. Diaz has also completed a test weight cut, things are definitely looking up for the former title challenger.
There are some people who remain skeptical about the comeback of the elder Diaz brother and among them lies UFC president Dana White.
When asked about Diaz returning, White had this to say.
“We’ll see how this thing plays out. I don’t have any expectations, whatsoever. We’ll see what happens.”
With word of the ‘209’ representative returning in 2021, many fighters have taken to social media to call out Nick Diaz, such as Khamzat Chimeav, Leon Edwards, Stephen Thompson and even the ‘Gorilla’ himself, Darren Till.
This begs the question… who should Stockton’s finest take on next?
