Shortly after his first pro loss, Sean O’Malley received much criticism from Ben Askren, which he didn’t take too kindly.
During his fight with Marlon Vera, Sean O’Malley sustained an injury to his ankle from a leg kick, which caused him to stumble around the octagon. This led to the controversial TKO stoppage victory for Vera. This resulted in O’Malley being carried on a stretcher out of the arena.
When asked about the incident, former UFC star, Ben Askren described it as being a sign of weakness on O’Malley’s end and that he should “grow up.”
“If they tried carting me out because of an ankle injury, I would’ve fought someone over that,” Askren said. “You’re not putting my ass on a stretcher because I got an ankle injury. I got one other good leg, and I’m gonna hop all the way to the back. Leave me the eff alone. I think he needs to grow up.
“It’s part of growing up. In life, you have failures, you have struggles. You’re gonna learn from them.”
O’Malley seemed perplexed at Askren’s analysis when he responded to him on his podcast, the Timbo Suga show,
“I thought Ben Askren was smart” O’Malley said, pointing out the fact that he didn’t want to cause any further damage to his already impaired foot.”
“Your foot’s (expletive) up, and you have to walk here to there. Or they said, ‘Here, we’ll push you on a little thing with wheels so you don’t have to walk on your (expletive) up foot.”
“Suga” added more salt as he continued to take his shots at “Big Ben.”
“I’m like, ‘God, big Ben – I thought you were smarter. I didn’t know you were stupid.’ It’s just stupid. If you ask the smartest person in the world, you smash their foot and you say, ‘Do you want to walk over there or do you want to be carted?,’ they would take the cart.”
While Askren claims he would have walked out instead of taking a ride on the stretcher, Tim Welch, O’Malley’s coach & friend, offers a new perspective, which says that Sean did not have the option to hop on out of there.
“He was trying to say I don’t need a stretcher like three times, they enforced it.” Welch tweeted post-fight.
The lookalikes’ friendship between each other has likely came to an end as the war of words is present. Safe to say Chase Hooper is Ben Askren’s favorite ‘son’ now.
