The 5 Biggest UFC Fights We Might See In 2022

“Let me tell you what, reality is better than any script you could ever write.” – Dana White

The UFC has had record breaking years successively in terms of how well it’s doing as a business. This reflects in the crops of talent they have across weight classes. In order to continue the level of momentum the company’s been having, it’s vital that we identify what we as fans actually want to see. Most of the weight classes have future stars emerging from the woodwork, and the foundations of the upper echelons were shaken deeply in 2021.

From the emergence of Mexico’s first home-grown Champion to the oldest first-time title holder, to the upset usurpation of the greatest female fighter in combat sports history and the seizure of the throne at Heavyweight… last year was something to behold. Reality was rocked to its core in 2021, and it’s laid the groundwork to spring into 2022 with tons of excitement. This next year feels like the magic is going to continue. There are plenty of prime-time promotional opportunities that could happen on the horizon, but

These are the 5 biggest fights we might see in 2022:

#5.) Prochazka vs. Adesanya

If both are successful in their upcoming title fights, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that we see Jiri Prochazka vs. Israel Adesanya in Adesanya’s second bid to take the Light Heavyweight title. Israel Adesanya plotted this course recently and wasn’t able to get the job done against recent Champion Jan Blachowicz. Jan recently lost his title to 42-year-old Glover Teixeira in a historic performance for the Brazilian. The word is that Prochazka is next for Glover, and that’s fine. Whatever happens after that’s handled though… the different scenarios could start to get very interesting. I’d say this matchup is indeed unlikely, but a fan can dream, right?

#4.) Volkanovski vs. Cejudo

The mystique surrounding this one is meaningful, and the comeback of the Olympian and two-division UFC World Champion at the weight class above where he left off could be special. Volkanovski vs. Cejudo for the Featherweight title is the perfect next challenge for the current Champion if you look at what he’s accomplished thus far. It’s going to be “now or never” very soon for Henry Cejudo, and this fight is more likely than the public on social media tends to believe. The Messenger shall return.

#3.) Covington vs. Masvidal

Oh, the melodrama! Covington vs. Masvidal is a sure-fire super fight for the Welterweight division. The subtext has been leading towards this matchup for quite some time. From friends to foes, Colby vs. Jorge has deep rooted history, built in storytelling, and a stylistic matchup that could turn out to be a classic. Chaos vs. Gamebred could very well happen. It’s super necessary.

#2.) McGregor vs. Diaz III

The long-awaited McGregor vs. Diaz III is probably the most obvious and anticipated bout of the listings, and rightfully so. This fight just has to happen. McGregor is still at unprecedented heights of fame, while Nate Diaz is one of the biggest stars in the history of the sport as well. If we never got the conclusion to this trilogy match it would be a crime against the fight game. Nate Diaz reportedly has one fight left on his contract, whereas McGregor is aiming for a return from injury. Looking around, there’s not many options more desirable than this “ace” up the UFC’s sleeve. The trilogy fight between these two seems like a fairly clear choice for this year.

#1.) Ngannou/Gane vs. Jones

It doesn’t get bigger than this. Jones vs. the winner of Ngannou/Gane is the pinnacle of big fights in the UFC today. Jones, aside from his controversy, is arguably the best the sport has ever seen. Ngannou’s star power now that he’s become champion is out of this world. A matchup with either of these Champions for his Heavyweight debut would be a gigantic fight. Ngannou vs. Jones is clearly the bigger of the two, but if Gane manages to get the jump on Francis Ngannou, that fight is particularly intriguing in its matchup of styles. I’m not sure what’s going to happen, or even the likelihood of this happening. But wouldn’t it be something?
