UFC 259: Aftermath

UFC 259, stacked from top to bottom and did not disappoint, 3 massive title fights backed up by several high profile bouts. A new champion was crowned at bantamweight with Aljamain Sterling picking up a questionable disqualification victory over Petr Yan and two title defenses! Jan Blachowicz and Amanda Nunes successfully defending their titles against two very tough contenders.

After a very exciting night of fights, opportunities for a numerous amount of amazing fights have presented themselves, we will do out very best to pinpoint the bouts that make the most sense, and fights we the fans want to see.

Jan Błachowicz is the man to take the 0 from one of the most popular fighters in the sport Israel Adesanya. Błachowicz took home the unanimous decision on Saturday, handing Adesanya his first loss in his professional MMA career, in doing so Błachowicz issued a statement to the world, Błachowicz showed that he is extremely deadly and is ready for any and all challengers that approach him, the only question is, who is the man to take a crack at the light heavyweight king?. The only man deserving of a title oppurtinity would have to be Glover Teixeira, Teixeira is currently riding a a fight winning streak, with massive wins over top contenders like Thiago Santos and Anthony Smith, logically, the next fight for Błachowicz would be #1 ranked light heavyweight is Teixeira.

Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya copped the first loss of his MMA career after losing a fairly unanimous decision to Jan Błachowicz. Adesanya’s dream at being a simultaneous title hold has been halted for the moment, Adesanya claims he will most probably return to middleweight to defend his title before he even thinks about jumping back up to light heavyweight. Adesanya will be looking to rebuild his confidence and self esteem by securing a dominant victory at middleweight.

Adesanya’s next title defence will most likely be against the winner of Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker, or, the winner of Darren Till and Marvin Vettori. Adesanya has expressed little interest in rematching Costa, Whittaker or Vettori but will face little option if either man is able to work their way to a title bout. ‘The Last Stylebender’ however has showed interest in doing battle with Darren Till, one matchup that has eluded Adesanya, if Till is able to pick up a vicory over Vettori, that might be the fight to make.

Amanda ‘The Lioness’ Nunes, arguably the greatest female martial artist in the world, Amanda picked apart yet another tough opponent, making quick work of a tough Megan Anderson in just over 2 minutes of the very first round.

Nunes has proved time and time again why she is at the top of the female pound for pound rankings decimating anyone who challenges her. While Nunes has worked over a lot of women over the course of her career, there are a few still itching to get their shot at ‘The Lioness’.

One such contender is #6 ranked bantamweight, Julianna Pena, Pena is coming off a submission victory over Sara McMann and has been on a bit of a war path, antagonizing the current dual title holder stating that she is Nunes’ “Kryptonite”, Nunes has shrugged off ‘The Venezuelan Vixen’, but with a somewhat shrinking list of contenders, Nunes may not have much choice.

Megan Anderson suffered the same fate as many of those before her, complete and utter domination by the #1 ranked pound for pound female fighter, Amanda Nunes. Anderson at 3-3 in the UFC has entered free agency, giving the Aussie quite a number of options.

PFL has been on the rise lately signing former UFC champions like Anthony Pettis and Fabricio Werdum, while it would be interesting to see Anderson fight for the PFL, the only women’s division is at 155lbs, whereas Anderson currently competes comfortably at 145lbs. The women’s lightweight matchups have been locked in and set for May 6th.

The more likely decision for Megan would be to sign up with Bellator, a few fighters that have been released from the UFC have have been approached by Scott Coker and eventually signed with the organisation, Anderson could very well be one of those fighters. An interesting choice for Anderson could also be to sign with BKFC, it does not seem very likely, but is not impossible.

Aljamain Sterling picked up a disappointing disqualification win over Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan. Petr was disqualified after delivering an illegal knee to a grounded Sterling in the fourth round, Aljamain couldn’t go on with the fight and was gifted the DQ victory. Although it is a very anti climactic and controversial way to win a title, he did win the title and he is the bantamweight champion of the world, so who does this knewly crowned champion take on in his first defence?. The obvious choice is a rematch against Petr Yan, no one is happy about how the fight ended, especially Sterling, no one wants to win a fight by disqualification let alone a title fight, the fight after the rematch however, that is very interesting. If Petr is able to reclaim a his title would a trilogy bout be in order? or would the winner of Corey Sandhagen and TJ Dillishaw have dibs on the next shot?.

Petr ‘No Mercy’ Yan lost his title in an unfortunate manner this past Sunday, Yan delivered a knee to the head of Aljamain Sterling who was at the time a grounded opponent, with all the adrenaline pumping throughout Yan’s body is normal that end error is made here and there, unfortunately, this error cost him the fight. Sterling has agreed to a rematch with Yan
