UFC Fight Night Edwards vs Muhammad: Aftermath

UFC Fight Night Edwards vs Muhammad was somewhat disappointing , not due to the quality of the fights, most of the fights were absolutely fantastic, but due to the fact that two fights ended in a no contest, one of which being the main event and was a result of a horrific eye poke. Belal Muhammad was the recipient of the devastating eye poke, his first main event ending in a saddening fashion, his opponent, Leon Edwards, was also not happy with this outcome, but seems to have moved on rather quickly. Misha Cirkunov vs Ryan Spann was a fantastic fight for as long as it lasted, Spann caught Cirkunov early and secured a first round tko victory. Dan Ige made quick work of up and comer Gavin Tucker, knocking him out in 22 seconds of the very first round.

After careful consideration and speculation, we will attempt to explain what is next for these fighters in the future. But of course, with the sport of MMA you never really know what’s to happen.

Leon Edwards vs Belal Muhammad was a potential title eliminator, with the winner either taking on reigning champ Kamaru Usman, or perhaps a number one contender shot against the likes of Stephen Thompson, but after a nasty eye poke in the second round, it was ruled a no contest. Muhammad seems to be angling for a rematch against Edwards, wanting to run it back and get it right, Edwards however seems to have other plans. Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards doesn’t seem to have any interest in running it back with Muhammad, it would appear as though Edwards believes he did enough last Saturday to earn himself a title shot after more then a year and a half of inactivity. While a title shot seems unlikely for Edwards a rematch with Muhammad or ‘Wonderboy’ appears more likely.

Ryan ‘Superman’ Spann made quite the impression last week with a swift TKO victory over Misha Cirkunov. Spann was riding a four fight winnin streak in the UFC before being derailed by Johnny Walker in 2020, Spann has more then made up for that loss with this jaw dropping victory this past Saturday, as for Spann’s next opponent, someone like rising prospect Paul ‘Bearjew’ Craig comes to mind, Craig is currently on a three fight winning streak and could produce fireworks with an opponent like Spann. Another potential fight for ‘Superman’ is Nikita Krylov who is coming off a loss to Magomed Ankalaev.

Misha Cirkunov took a devastating loss to Ryan ‘Superman’ Spann last week, getting TKO’d in just over a minute of the opening round. It would appear as though Cirkunov struggles to maintain any sort of momentum, not being on any sort of winning streak since 2016, in all honesty Cirkunov could be cut if he doesn’t manage to pick up a win soon. Cirkunov will most likely take on someone ranked below him and it would be fantastic if that someone would be Jamahal Hill, Hill is a legitimate prospect at light heavyweight, boasting an undeafeated 7-0 record with 2 no contests.

Dan ’50K’ Ige shocked the world this past Saturday with his flash knockout of featherweight rising star Gavin ‘Guv’nor’ Tucker. Ige was on a 6 fight winning streak before taking a loss to Calvin Katter, snapping his streak. ’50K’ came back better then ever however, silencing a very tough Gavin Tucker in just 22 seconds. While Ige has proved that his loss to Calvin Katter was a minor bump in the road, the question still remains, who will take on the Hawaiian next? ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung would appear to be the next opponent for ’50K’, Jung took a unanimous decision loss to Brian Ortega at the end of last year and is in prime condition to take on the potential title contender that is Dan Ige.
