Khabib Nurmagomedov was recently moved up to the number one pound for pound champion after a jaw-dropping submission on Justin Gaethje. After the fight he announced his retirement and asked, for one thing, to be given the pound for pound title.
At first, Jon was grateful to give up his title and even said, “Until I take that heavily crown, I grant you the spot.” Yet later that same day he turns to Twitter again to express his unwillingness to give up the title, saying things like, “15 world titles, numbers don’t lie” and “I’m just going to ask for the heavyweight championship belt and see if they give it to me. Since we can just ask for things now”.
Today, the UFC released an updated pound for pound rankings and as per Khabibs request, the Eagle has taken the crown as the number 1 pound for pound king. Does Khabib deserve this title?
Jon Jones is the youngest person to ever get a UFC world title. He also has the most title fight wins out of any UFC champion (14), as opposed to Khabibs 4 defenses. Jones also has the longest win streak, tied with the most submissions wins, and most wins in the light heavyweight division.
Khabib on the other hand has a perfect undefeated record of 29-0-0 with a UFC record of 13-0-0. Nurmagomedov has the record for the most takedowns in a singular UFC fight. Khabib is tied in the number of Lightweight title defenses (4) and has the longest title reign the UFC lightweight division has ever seen with 931 days.
Both of these fighters are well deserved of the Pound for Pound title but who do you think should have the crown?
